Profile: Mexican Sour Gherkins/Cucamelon/Mouse Melon/Sandita





Family name:  Cucurbitaea
Scientific name:  Melothria scabra

These mini melons are adorable and make great healthy snacks.  Although they taste like cucumbers and are in the same family as cucumbers, they are, in fact, not a variety of cucumber.  

How to store:

Keep in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.  Use as soon as possible, but mine have been okay even after one week.

How to prepare:
To me, Mexican Sour Gherkins taste just like cucumbers but are slightly tangy on the outside.  They can be eaten raw by themselves, in salads, or pickled.  Use your imagination to incorporate these mini melons into your meals.  I'm pickling some of mine:
